THE BERET

LE WALT LOVES THE BERET

The ideal accessory for this season? The beret remains a timeless accessory...

The Walt's art of living is that of the painter... What headgear does the painter have on his head? The beret!

We wanted to honor this true fashion accessory! But even before being used in the fashion world to launch trends, it is above all an accessory of protection against the cold and the rain.

This is the reason why painters wear this accessory (to protect themselves from the cold of the workshops).

There have been several debates about the origin of the beret. It is generally assimilated to the Basque Country, but it actually comes from Bearn. The two regions remain very close.

The beret first appeared in the 15th century near the town of Pau with Pyrenean shepherds who made their own berets.

The berets were knitted with sheep's wool, a very efficient wool to protect them from cold temperatures and bad weather. The wool is a cocoon for the head.

Sheep's wool is a natural material that has waterproof, resistant, heat regulating and anti-odour virtues.

It is ideal to wear the beret during the autumn and winter seasons.

Since then, the beret has been worn many times in all eras. It is the headgear that has established itself as the go-to headwear accessory nationwide. But why a national craze for the beret?

The beret was first adopted, for its remarkable properties, by the military sector (several colors assigned to different regiments of the army). The beret then became an emblem, a symbol, an identity (beyond the traditional festive dress of the South of France) for the French, and this since the Resistance during the Second World War. It is the physical element that allows to recognize a member of the resistance.

THE SYMBOL OF FRANCE

We define the beret as an accessory of protection, and identification by being a symbol of solidarity and gathering... But it is also nowadays a real fashion accessory!

The beret has not only participated in the parades of military troops. It has also had the opportunity to parade for the most famous fashion houses that have made it an everyday hat and a wardrobe essential. Of course, the beret was initially created to be worn by men. However, in the 1930s famous women began to take hold of the accessory, such as Michele Morgan, Greta Garbo and Brigitte Bardot.

The beret is now a timeless accessory that has its place in our closet. It is one of the symbols of France around the world.

To be as trendy as ever, we recommend the authentic berets of the Laulhère brand. They are made in the Pyrenees in pure virgin Merino wool.

We also recommend Le Béret Français which makes its berets in the Basque Country. This brand has obtained the label "entreprise du patrimoine vivant".

For even more style and to add a touch of originality to your look, we recommend the bright red beret attributed to the Parisian style and tilted to the side!
